Background and aim: Grief is one of the most complex and profound human experiences, occurring in response to the loss of a significant person or relationship. This experience, particularly when involving the loss of a child, can leave severe emotional, cognitive, and behavioral effects on individuals. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of schema therapy on life satisfaction, resilience, and life expectancy in bereaved parents.
Research Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest, posttest, and three-month follow-up design with a control group. The statistical population included bereaved parents who had referred to counseling centers in Tabriz in 2023 due to the loss of their young child. The research sample consisted of 24 parents (15 women and 9 men), selected through purposive sampling and randomly divided into two groups of 12 (experimental and control). Research instruments included the Grief Experience Questionnaire (Barrett & Scott, 1989), Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener et al., 1993), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (2003), and Snyder's Hope Scale (1991). The schema therapy intervention was conducted over eight weekly 90-minute sessions based on Young et al.'s protocol (2003). Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni tests.
Results: The results showed significant differences between pretest and posttest scores for life satisfaction, resilience, and life expectancy in the experimental group. Moreover, no significant difference was found between posttest and follow-up scores in the experimental group, indicating that the results were maintained during the follow-up period.
Discussion: The effectiveness is attributed to the integrated therapeutic approach in modifying maladaptive schemas, facilitating deep emotional processing, and replacing ineffective coping styles—all of which help parents reconstruct meaning in life. Therefore, schema therapy is recommended as an effective and deep-rooted intervention for improving the quality of life of bereaved parents.
