Abstract:   (18 Views)
Background and aim This study aimed to examine the structural modeling of delayed gratification and executive functions in relation to the adolescents tendency toward risk taking behaviors with the mediating role of resilience. Despite the importance of examining cognitive, motivational, and emotional factors simultaneously in explaining adolescents’ risk taking behaviors, this area of research still faces a significant gap.
Research Methods This descriptive-correlational study was conducted among secondary school students (boys and girls) in Shahriar during the 2025 academic year(N=8193). A total of 400 students were selected using cluster random sampling. Data were collected using the Iranian Adolescent Risk-Taking Scale (IADS), the Monetary Choice Questionnaire (MCQ), the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS), and the Adolescent Resilience Scale. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in SPSS (version 26) and AMOS (version 21).
Results Findings indicated that delayed gratification had a significant positive effect on resilience (β=0/264) and significant negative effect on tendency toward risk taking behaviors (β=−0/315). Conversely, executive functions deficits had a significant negative effect on resilience (β=−0/426) and a positive effect on the tendency toward risk taking behaviors (β=0/406). Furthermore, resilience had a significant negative impact on tendency toward risk taking behaviors (β=−0/244). Bootstrap analysis confirmed the significant mediating role of resilience in the relationships between delayed gratification and risk taking behaviors (β=0/068) as well as between executive functions deficits and risk taking behaviors (β=0/104).
Conclusion These  findings supprted the mediating role of resilience in the relationship between delayed gratification, executive functions, and risk taking behaviors, indicating that these variables have significant associations risk taking behaviors.
