Background and Aim: Depression, beyond its individual effects, has far-reaching consequences for the family structure, placing children at heightened risk for psychological, social, and emotional challenges. This disorder can weaken family dynamics and disrupt the quality of interpersonal relationships. The present study aimed to explore the lived experiences of adolescent children of parents with depressive disorders, in order to understand the various psychological and behavioral impacts of this condition on their children. Research Methods: This qualitative study was conducted using a descriptive phenomenological approach, as it focused on gaining an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of children coping with a parent suffering from depression. The participants included 12 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years, each with at least one parent clinically diagnosed with depression. They were recruited voluntarily from counseling units in health and treatment centers in the city of Mahabad. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step method of thematic analysis. Results: The data analysis led to the extraction of five main themes: the home environment, the impact of parental depression on various aspects of the child’s life, personal reactions to the parent’s depressive condition, lack of life skills, and psychological consequences of parental depression on the child. Conclusion: The lived experience of children of parents with depression is full of emotional, relational, and social challenges that affect their psychological development and quality of life. Understanding these experiences can provide a basis for designing supportive and preventive interventions tailored to the real needs of these children. Such an approach, while reducing the negative consequences of parental depression, also helps to improve the family’s mental health.
