Background and Aim Parental epression, regardless of its individual effects can negativily affect the family functioning and exposes children to psychological, social, and emotional problems. The present study aimed to explore the lived experiences of Iranian adolescents having a parent with depressive disorder.
Research Methods This is a qualitative study based on descriptive phenomenology. Participants were 12 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years, whose parents had been clinically diagnosed with depression, referred to local health and counseling centers in Mahabad, Iran, in 2024. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step method.
Results Based on the data analysis, five main themes were extracted: living environment (confusion, anger/aggression, loneliness, and communication difficulties), impact of parental depression on aspects of life (feeling guilty, caregiving/support, and learned helplessness), reactions to parental depression (empathy, encouragement, stress/worry, and disappointment), lack of life skills (low self-esteem, poor assertiveness, and indecisiveness), and psychological consequences of parental depression (fear, low mood, and social isolation).
Discussion Iranian adolescents having a parent with depression are exposed to emotional, relational, and social challenges that affect their psychological health and quality of life. Understanding their experiences can help in designing supportive and preventive interventions tailored to their real needs.
