Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine the mediating role of emotional and interpersonal difficulties in the relationship between defense mechanisms and suicidal ideation in mothers with mentally retarded children.
Research Method: The research method was descriptive correlation type and the statistical population of this research included all mothers with mentally retarded children in Arak City in the fall of 2022, from among whom 270 people were selected using the accessible method. The study tools included the Defense Style Questionnaire-40 by Andrews et al. (1993); the Emotion Regulation Difficulty Scale by Gratz & Roemer (2004); Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-47 by Pilkonis et al. (1996) and the Suicide Cognitions Scale by Rudd et al. (2010). Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data.
Results: In the present study, the indirect path coefficient between mature mechanisms and suicidal ideation (β=-0.339, P=0.01) and immature mechanisms and suicidal ideation (β=0.255, P=0.01) at the level of 0.01 were significant.
Discussion: Emotional and interpersonal difficulties play a mediating role in the relationship between defense mechanisms and suicidal ideation in mothers with mentally retarded children.
