Introduction: The present study aimed to determine the relationship between socio-economic factors and domestic violence as well as behavioral problems in preschool children of Rumeshkan, with the mediating role of family structure.
Methodology: This was a descriptive-correlational study. The statistical population consisted of all preschool children enrolled in kindergartens in Rumeshkan during the 2021-2022 academic year. Based on Morgan's table, a sample of 288 children was selected using the cluster sampling method. Data were collected using the Quay and Peterson Behavioral Problems Questionnaire (1996), the Olson et al. Family Structure Questionnaire (1985), the Olson et al. Exposure to Domestic Violence Questionnaire (1985), and a researcher-made Socio-Economic Status Questionnaire (2022). Data were analyzed using simultaneous regression analysis.
Findings: The results indicated that socio-economic factors explained approximately 25% of the variance in behavioral problems, 31% of the variance in domestic violence, and 33% of the variance in family structure. Thus, the main research hypothesis regarding the relationship between socio-economic factors and behavioral problems, domestic violence, and family structure was confirmed. Furthermore, family structure explained 46% and 53% of the variance in behavioral problems and domestic violence, respectively, thereby confirming the first and second sub-hypotheses.
Conclusion: Ultimately, since family structure, socio-economic factors, and domestic violence serve as predictors of behavioral problems, it is suggested that families, the educational system, and other relevant institutions take measures to mitigate the impact of these predictors on the occurrence of behavioral problems.
