Background and Aim This study aimed to determine the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and behavioral problems in preschool children during the post-COVID era in Rumeshkan, Iran, considering the mediating role of family structure.
Research Methods This is a descriptive-correlational study. The study population consisted of all preschool children from kindergartens in Rumeshkan county during 2021-2022. Of these, 288 children were selected using the cluster sampling method. Data collection was performed using Quay and Peterson’s Revised Behavior Problem Checklist (RBPC), Olson et al.’s Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES-III), and Ghodratnama et al.’s Socio-Economic Status Scale. Data analysis was carried out using simultaneous multiple regression analysis.
Results The research hypothesis regarding the relationship between SES, behavioral problems, and family structure was confirmed. The SES explained about 25% of the variance in behavioral problems and 33% of the variance in family structure. Furthermore, family structure explained 46% of the variance in behavioral problems. Gender, SES, and family structure together explained 13.8% of the variance in behavioral problems.
Conclusion During the post-COVID era, lower SES can increase behavioral problems among preschool children by weakening family structure as a mediating variable. The rigidity of family structure in the face of economic shocks emerges is a key factor in the emergence of aggressive behaviors and isolation in children, which is likely to persist without if they not receive interventions.
