Background and Aim Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a major challenge in the development of children's communication skills. The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two play-therapy methods, Floortime therapy and Son-rise program, in improving the communication skills of children with ASD.
Research Methods This is a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design using a control group. The study population included all children with ASD in Sari, Iran, in 2020, of whom 45 were selected via convenience sampling and randomly assigned to three experimental and control groups (15 people in each group). Data were collected using the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale–Second Edition (GARS-2). Multivariate analysis of covariance and Bonferroni’s post hoc test were used to analyze the data in SPSS software, version 26.
Results The results of this study demonstrate the significant potential of the Floortime and Son-Rise methods in enhancing communication skills, further highlighting the necessity of incorporating interaction-based intervention approaches into rehabilitation programs for children with autism spectrum disorder. In other words, both methods can serve as effective interventions within communication rehabilitation programs for children with autism spectrum disorder
Conclusion Both Floortime and Son-rise therapies can be used as effective interventions in communication rehabilitation programs for children with ASD.
